On April 23, 1976 a Decree of Erection establishing the parish of St. James the Apostle in Spring Texas was sent to the Holy Cross Fathers. Under their leadership, parishioners from St. Mary Magdalene in Humble and St. Edwards in Spring formed the new community. They met at Teague Middle School while the church was being constructed, where it stands today in its present location. When the doors opened on June 10, 1979 in the new facility, Aldine Westfield was a two lane street. The parish boasted 253 registered parishioners. Many believed that the parish would never grow, but would stay nestled amidst the sleepy pines of the San Jacinto Deanery. The future would tell a different story.

The founding pastor, Rev. James C. Fahey served until 1980 when he was succeeded by Rev. Bob Brennan. Later, Rev. Frank Zlotkowski would be added as Parochial Vicar. The Holy Cross Fathers left St. James in 1988, being recalled by their Provincial.

In 1988, St. James became a diocesan parish under the leadership of Rev. Ralph Schmidt with Rev. Hubert Kealy serving a Parochial Vicar. Since then many priests have had the opportunity to serve at St. James as parochial vicars.

In 1992 Rev. John F. Ulm became the pastor and served the parish until the arrival of Rev. Frank X. Quezada who was named as pastor in 1999 and served the parish until 2002. In June of 2002 Rev. Charles J. Samperi became pastor.

At the present time, St. James boasts of approximately 1.600 families and is an active and vibrant part of the Archdiocese of Galveston – Houston. Our Mission Statement is simple, and yet profound; “Living our timeless Catholic Faith in a contemporary world.”

We achieve this through celebrating the liturgy as a community united with Christ as head. We support one another through prayer and active involvement in parish activities. We are a vital part of the Spring area, proudly proclaiming the richness of our Catholic Faith, which has been announced throughout the world for over 2,000 years, namely, that Jesus Christ is Lord and God over all!
